Official Statement
Dear IAMFT Membership,
The Illinois Affiliation of Marriage and Family Therapists stands firm in its commitment to uphold all values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Every individual, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion/faith, or socioeconomic status, deserves equal opportunities to be heard and to thrive and succeed.
As systemic and socially just therapists, we firmly believe the perspectives of all individuals must be respected and heard, as they collectively make us more aware, responsive and empathetic to others.
We recognize that our progress is measured by how we treat our most vulnerable and marginalized members. By championing these causes, we work towards a future where everyone is valued, respected, and has the opportunity to live a fulfilling and authentic life. These are our stances as an organization. They align with the ethical principles we agree to uphold as Marriage and Family Therapists.
In standing firm to our commitment to uphold the values of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in every aspect of our community and work, we repeat, strengthen and renew our commitment to:
Reproductive Rights We support the fundamental right to reproductive autonomy. Every person should have access to choices - comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including contraception and safe, legal abortion. We stand against any efforts to restrict reproductive freedoms and advocate for policies that protect and expand these essential rights.
Gender-Affirming Care We affirm the importance of gender-affirming care for transgender, intersex, gender queer, and non-binary individuals. Access to respectful, knowledgeable, and affirming healthcare is crucial for the well-being of all people. We advocate for the rights of individuals to receive the care they need without discrimination or barriers.
Rights of Immigrants We are unwavering in our support for the rights and dignity of immigrants. Immigrants enrich our communities and contribute to our society in countless ways. We call for compassionate and fair immigration policies that respect the human rights of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or legal status.
“…. The injustice of having some significant area of one’s social experience obscured from collective understanding owing to persistent and wide-ranging hermeneutical marginalization…” – that is hermeneutical injustice (Fricker, 2006).
